Emergency Delivery

Safely deliver an emergency package from the drone port on the mainland to Bugarura Island in Lake Kivu at a distance of 20km, then return and land safely at the starting point. No battery swap is allowed at the drop-off location.

Sample Pick-Up

Pick up as many 250g modules as possible from the droneport on Bugarura Island and return them to the mainland on the shores of Lake Kivu. Several packages may be carried at one time.

Successfully provide a high-quality orthomosaics of Bugarura Island. Flights must be operated out of the droneport on the mainland.

Evaluation Criteria

Flights are disqualified if they fail to meet any of the checklist items:

  • Items were successfully delivered to the Bugarura Island
  • No airspace violations took place
  • The cargo item arrived in full integrity
  • Standard Operating Procedures were followed
  • The cargo drop-off required minimal intervention at the destination location
  • No battery recharge was necessary
  • The aircraft returned successfully to the origin in a timely manner after dispatching the cargo
  • Contingency procedures, such as rerouting were successfully implemented
  • No physical items on the ground outside of the designated landing areas were hit
  • A C2 telemetry link was maintained at all times

Note: For this challenge, the aircraft can either drop the cargo or land, drop the cargo and take off again with minimal human intervention for the offloading.

  • Contingency procedures, such as rerouting were successfully implemented

Evaluation Criteria

The predetermined survey area comprises three square kilometers. The recommended minimum resolution to successfully complete the task is 20cm. Teams need to take off and return after completion of the survey and for each battery change.
Flights are disqualified if they fail to meet any of the checklist items:

  • No airspace violations took place
  • Standard Operating Procedures submitted by the teams ahead of the flights were followed
  • Takeoff and landing occurred successfully within the designated area
  • UAV landed in effectiveness and precision of autonomous take-off and landing (hand launch with an automatic takeoff sequence is also considered to be an autonomous take-off)
  • A C2 telemetry link was maintained at all times
